What is song key?
A song's key tells you which pitches and chords the track is built around. Songs in major keys generally sound bright and uplifting; minor keys feel moodier and more cinematic. Knowing the key is the first step to making any remix, mashup, or DJ transition sound musical instead of accidental.
What is BPM?
BPM stands for beats per minute — the tempo at which the song plays. House sits around 120–128 BPM, hip-hop around 80–95 BPM, drum and bass around 170–180 BPM. Producers use BPM to match grooves, time-stretch loops, and design transitions.
Why key and BPM matter for remixing
When you layer two tracks with mismatched keys, the result clashes harmonically — even at the same tempo. Matching key (or staying within the Camelot wheel adjacency) keeps your remix sounding intentional. BPM matching keeps the groove tight.
How to choose compatible songs
Use the Camelot wheel: any track on the same number, one step clockwise, one step counter-clockwise, or the same number with a different letter (A/B) will mix harmonically. Combine that with BPM within ±6% and you have a clean blend.
Best keys for remix contests
There's no single 'winning' key, but minor keys (A Minor, F# Minor, C Minor) dominate club-ready remixes because they sit naturally over modern synth sound design. Major keys work best for vocal-led pop edits.
